The Room
wire, printed photographs, 35mm film negatives (2018)
“The Room” is a sculptural installation made of wire and photographs. Using 35mm film negatives and printed photographs from my archive accompanied by wire structures, a sanctuary is built–my bedroom.
The burning process of “The Room” melted away my most personal memories. As the walls came down from the fire, the remains of the photographs clung to one another, then exposed the cold, hard, bare wire structure of the room. This disintegration of the sculpture represents one’s emotional barriers being brought down as they share their most intimate selves with another, its subsequent slow deconstruction sharing the feeling of being torn from a connection. The fantasy of building up and tearing down of intimacy is ultimately left with fragmented memories of intimacy, depicting the transient nature of connection.
